Lady Raiders Split with Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Middle Tennessee (20-25, 3-9 SBC) split the final two games in its Sun Belt series with Western Kentucky (30-17, 3-5 SBC), winning 6-0 and losing 7-2 Sunday at WKU Softball Field.

Western Kentucky roughed up Lady Raider pitchers Stayc Preator and Amanda Kendall for 10 hits in the second game, as Preator started the game and Kendall came into the game in the fourth inning. The Toppers scored two runs to start its half of the first inning on a two RBI single by Kristalyn Smith.

Middle Tennessee answered in the top of the second inning when Laura Brockman scored on an error by Western Kentucky. The Toppers put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Jessie Richardson and a sacrifice by Smith.

Brockman scored in the fourth inning for the Lady Raiders, again on a Topper error. Western Kentucky all but put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning when they tacked on three more runs.

Preator picks up the loss and falls to 6-10 on the season. She worked 3.1 innings allowing seven hits and three strikeouts and four runs. Kendall went 2.2 innings allowing three hits.

Senior hurler Jennifer Martinez (13-10) threw a three hit shutout to help lead the Lady Raiders to a 6-0 win over WKU in the first game. Brockman and Leah Grothause each went 2-for-4.

Middle Tennessee exploded on the board in the top of the third inning scoring four runs on five hits. Grothause started the inning with a single and Steffi Silva and Kristina Hieb followed with singles of their own.

The Lady Raiders scored their first run when Topper pitcher Allison Silver walked Lisa Sherman to send in Grothause. Martinez followed with an RBI single to send home Silva and Brockman sent home Sherman and Hieb on a two RBI single.

In the top of the sixth inning Grothause began the rally with a double to the centerfield wall. After Hieb walked and Sherman singled to load the bases, Linday Azevedo hit a two RBI single to score Grothause and Hieb.

Middle Tennessee returns home on Monday to host Auburn University. The single game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Lady Raider Field.
