Lady Raiders Runner-Up at Sun Belt Tournament
May 11, 2002 · MT Media RelationsSenior pitcher Jennifer Martinez threw the first perfect game in Sun Belt Tournament history in the Lady Raiders 1-0 win over FIU on Friday. (MT)
Playing in the championship game against top-seeded and 20th ranked Louisiana-Lafayette (49-11), the Lady Raiders held the Lady Cajuns scoreless through five innings before ULL broke it open. Louisiana-Lafayette scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to clinch the Sun Belt Tournament crown.
Middle Tennessee falls to the Lady Cajuns for the second year in a row, but it was still a positive end to the Lady Raider season. Coming from the four seed, Middle Tennessee completed the sweep of New Mexico State for the year, and shutout host Florida International 1-0, with the help of senior Jennifer Martinez's perfect game, to advance to the championship game.
Although Martinez (16-14) picked up the loss against ULL on Saturday, she made a name for herself on Friday with her no-no against FIU. It is the first perfect game in Sun-Belt Tournament history.
