Lady Raider Volleyball Travels Down Under

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - When the Middle Tennessee Lady Raider volleyball team leaves for Australia today it will be a culmination of five long years of summer camps and concession work to get there.

The 13-day whirlwind tour will take the Lady Raiders from Fiji to New Zealand and ultimately to the continent of Australia. The team will mix sightseeing with volleyball matches in the two-week adventure, which is directed by Bring It Promotions.

"This is a product of five years of working volleyball camps and concessions at concerts, football games and basketball games," said head coach Lisa Kissee. "Each player was required to put in 120 hours, and because of their hard work, no one has to pay out of their own pockets to go and all the money came from fundraising, none came from our athletic budget."

The trip has a three-pronged purpose for the team. First it gives the team a chance to have the experience of a lifetime, second since the team is playing teams with different styles it prepares them for the fall and third it is a great recruiting crew for Kissee and her assistant coach Tara Miller.

"I believe this trip will make each player a better person, by giving them a taste of how other cultures live," Kissee said. "Plus the benefit of seeing other styles of play will I believe help us in the season to come."

While there the Lady Raiders will play 10 matches. The Bring It Promotions crew have set up matches in all three countries including a match with the Australia National Team.

Kissee has tried to prepare the team for the cultural differences they will encounter. She has given them information sheets on each of the countries and has attempted to acclimate them to the government, history, language and food.

"I believe by learning about the countries we are going to visit it will help them when we get there," she said. "I think it will give them a deeper respect and understanding about where we are going."
