Cooper, Archer Named to CPL All-Star Team

July 8, 2002 · MT Media Relations
Everyone that followed the Blue Raider baseball team, particularly toward the end of the 2002 season, knew that junior Chad Cooper and freshman Josh Archer had the chance to become all-stars during their career. Now, the duo has done just that.

Cooper and Archer have been selected to the Coastal Plain League's South All-Star Team after turning in stellar first halves of their summer season.

Cooper, who is plying his trade for the Fayetteville Swamp Dogs, is batting .304 in the leadoff spot. He has three doubles and a homer during the first half and is reaching base 39.5 percent of the time. Cooper is also picking up where he left off in the stolen base department, swiping seven bags in eight attempts so far this summer.

Archer, who plays for the Florence Redwolves, is having a monster summer. He is currently batting .299 with eight doubles, three homers, and 15 RBIs. He has a slugging percentage of .474 and has scored 18 times. His tallies in each of these categories lead the team except for average, where he stands second.

"It's nice to see that our players are doing well and getting recognition for their accomplishments," said Blue Raider head coach Steve Peterson. "Any time you have your average up around .300 in a wooden bat league, it says something about your ability at the plate. Chad and Josh are getting some good experience this summer and I'm sure it will help them continue to improve once they get back to Murfreesboro in the fall."

The Blue Raider teammates will reunite on July 10 for the CPL's version of the Midsummer Classic. The game is set to be played in Fayetteville at Cooper's home field.

The Coastal Plain League began play in 1997 and received certification from the NCAA and Major League Baseball in 1999. The League plays exclusively in the Carolinas and Virginia and encompasses 12 teams. Cooper and Archer continue a long line of Blue Raiders that have played in the Coastal Plain League.
