Jackson, Staniak Win During First Day

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's Kirk Jackson and Michael Staniak both picked up victories Friday during the first day of prequalifying at the 2002 Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Champions Club.

Jackson defeated Coppin State's Reshard Kellici, 6-1, 6-1, while Staniak won in a walkover.

Trevor Short lost 6-1, 6-2, to Adam Narczewski of Winthrop, while Greg Pollack lost to Loyola Marymount's Tigran Martirosyan, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Brandon Allan dropped the first set of his match, 7-6 (5) to Michael Rubin of Michigan late in the evening and was still playing, and sophomore Rishan Kuruppu's match versus Kevin Gill of Butler was still to come.

Matches were pushed back on Friday due to inclement weather in the Chattanooga area and did not begin until approximately 3 p.m. ET. Second and third-round singles action will continue Saturday.

The doubles prequalifying field was also announced Friday, with Short and Staniak set to take on Lamar's John Guerrero and Jakob Paulsen. Allen and Pollack will play Furman's James Cameron and Patrick Fillnow. Doubles action was to begin Saturday, but may be pushed back a day because of Friday's weather.

The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships feature 256-singles player and 128-doubles team prequalifying tournaments played October 4-7, which feed into 64-player and 32-doubles team qualifying tournaments October 8-9. The 64-player, 32-doubles team main draw takes place Oct. 10-13.
