Lady Raiders Win During First Day of Fall Invite

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Rain played havoc with play on the first day of the Middle Tennessee Women's Fall Invitational, forcing a number of matches to be canceled and a host of others inside Friday.

Middle Tennessee's Carien Venter defeated Lipscomb's Jessica Bowman, 6-3, 6-2, in Flight A, while Emily Vest took care of Austin Peay's Elizabeth Whelpley, 6-2, 6-2, in Flight B. Venter will take on Monica Gonzalez-Gordo of Memphis in the quarterfinals on Saturday, while Vest will play Ball State's Jenny Batty in the quarterfinals.

Middle Tennessee's Laura McNamara will play her first round match Saturday against Ball State's Jill Wieman in Flight C.

In doubles McNamara and Venter won 8-3 over Belmont's Starr Steffner and Laura DeHaan in Flight A. The twosome will play Cincinnati's Lyndsey Molony and Khuschehr Italia in the quartefinals on Saturday.

Vest is playing doubles with Florencia Basile of Ole Miss, and the pairing defeated Jacksonville State's Georgann Davis and Zeynep Gurkaynak, 8-0, and will take on Austin Peay's Avana Carere and Kelli Bridges Saturday.

Action continues Saturday morning and will finish Sunday afternoon at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
