Venter Picks Up Win Over Ranked Opponent

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Carien Venter's 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) win over Vanderbilt's No. 55th ranked Kelly Schmandt, in flight two singles, highlighted first day action for Middle Tennessee Lady Raider tennis at the June Stewart Invitational on the campus of Vanderbilt University Friday.

Venter advanced to second round action, were she lost to University of Tennessee's Sabita Maharaj 4-6, 3-6. She is set to play in the consolation round Saturday at 9 a.m.

Number 31 ranked Manon Kruse played three matches in flight one singles on Friday, but will withdraw from the rest of the tournament due to an injury. Kruse opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Penn State's Megan Marten. In second round action she dropped a 1-6, 5-7 decision to Georgia Tech's Jamie Wong and lost again in consolation to Tennessee's Tammy Encina 5-7, 1-6.

Senior Stacy Varnell will also not complete the tournament due to injury. The senior from Marietta, Georgia opened the day with a 0-6, 2-6 loss to Kentucky's Jill Buckley in flight three singles. She and doubles partner Kruse have also withdrawn from doubles action, which is set to begin on Saturday.

In other action, junior Laura McNamara picked up a first round win in flight six singles with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over Georgia Tech's Maria Nieto. Sophomore Emily Vest is competing in a round robin, losing to Kentucky's Danielle Petrisko 1-6, 2-6 and defeating Purdue's Catie McLevish 6-4, 6-3.
