Williams Finishes Tied for 3rd, Blue Raiders Slip to 8th

Gulf Shores, Ala. - Senior Patrick Williams fired a career-best three-round total of 209 to finish in a tie for third at the 2002 Fall Beach Classic. Williams had back-to-back sub 70 rounds to open the tournament, then registered a 73 in rainy conditions on Tuesday.

As a team, Middle Tennessee slipped to eighth after shooting a disappointing 299 in the final round that was delayed more than two hours due to rain. The Blue Raiders' three-day total was 866, which was 13 strokes better than any tournament played this fall. The 866 score was the best by a Blue Raider team since they shot an 865 at the Chattanooga Intercollegiate in the fall of 2001 - a span of 13 tournaments.

"We had a great tournament," head coach Johnny Moore said. "We played our best of the fall season, but it just was not enough. There were some great team's down here and all of them played extremely well. I thought Patrick (Williams) did a great job of managing the course and hitting shots when he had to. He was not having a great fall, but hopefully this tournament will turn things around and he can carry that momentum into the spring."

Charlie Gibson was the next Blue Raider finisher as he tied for 19th with a 215. Blake Bivens tied for 42nd with a 220, while Taylor Bowers tied for 64th with a 228. Josh Nelms completed the scoring with a 231 to finish 70th.

The Fall Beach Classic marked the end of the fall season for Middle Tennessee, who will have off until the spring season begins in February.
