MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee baseball coach Steve Peterson announced the signing of Knoxville, Tenn., product Michael McKenry on Thursday, the only early signee for the Blue Raiders this year.

McKenry, a senior at Farragut High School, brings an impressive resume with him, including heading into this season second in the state of Tennessee in career home runs and RBIs. The catcher has earned All-State recognition the past two years, batting .407 as a junior with 14 home runs, 19 doubles and 54 RBIs. FHS has finished the last two seasons as the state runner-up.

"Michael is a quality player and a great kid, very hardworking," FHS head coach Tommy Pharr said. "I'm beginning my sixth year here and he's probably the best player we've had come through since I've been here, and that's saying something. He is very excited about going to Middle Tennessee and should be a welcome addition to Coach Peterson's squad."

Peterson had much of the same to say about McKenry.

"Michael is a quality kid who comes from a quality program at Farragut. Coach Pharr has an outstanding program and Michael has been a main cog for him," Peterson said. "We want to pick up where Coach Pharr and his staff left off and continue Michael's development. He has all the tools to be a quality college player and fall in line with the many great catchers we've had here at Middle Tennessee."

The Blue Raiders begin spring practice in late January and open the 2003 season against Jacksonville State on February 21 at Reese Smith Field.
