Lady Raiders Fall to Hokies 4-3

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Middle Tennessee women's tennis (1-6) dropped a close match 4-3 to Virginia Tech (9-0) on Sunday at Burrows/Burrelson Tennis Center.

No. 29 ranked Stacy Varnell and Manon Kruse took the No. 1 doubles with a 8-6 victory over Virginia Tech's Elissa Kinard and Carolyn Kramer. However the Lady Raiders failed to pick up another win in doubles and conceded the doubles point to the Hokies.

Kruse, ranked No. 56, won her second straight match defeating Kristen Stubbs 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Jennifer Klaschka picked up a win at No. 2 singles defeating Kramer 6-1, 6-3 and the Lady Raiders also took No. 3 singles with a Carien Venter victory over the Hokies Kinard 6-1, 6-2.

Playing for game point in the final three matches, Varnell at No. 4 singles and Laura McNamara at No. 5 singles each went three sets but couldn't pull away for the victory. Sophomore Emily Vest fell and No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-3 to Virginia Tech's Felice Lam.

"I think again we really played hard, but just came up short," said head coach Randy Holden. "We had team match points but just let them slip away."

The Lady Raiders return home to host Mississippi State on Friday February 14. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
