EKU Sweeps Softball

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - In their first action in 10 days, Middle Tennessee softball (3-5) was swept by Eastern Kentucky (2-0) 4-3, 7-3 Sunday at Lady Raider Field.


Senior hurler Stayc Preator (2-2) picked took the loss in the first game as she went five innings allowing four runs on five hits and struck out two. She also gave up two homeruns.


After Eastern Kentucky got on the board with a homerun by Bethany Berrington in the top of the second, the Lady Raiders answered to tie it up when Jennifer Dorais' sacrifice fly to left field sent home Leah Grothause. EKU scored again in the fourth, fifth and sixth and the Lady Raiders came back to score in the fifth and sixth. Muriel Ledbetter got an RBI single in the fifth to send home Krystal Scott and Kip Phillips picked up an RBI single in the sixth that sent home Cortney Mitchell.


It was all EKU in the second game as the Colonels broke the game open in the top of the fifth with five runs. EKU jumped on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first and the Lady Raiders answered in the bottom of the second when Megan Cherinka hit an RBI single to send home Ledbetter to tie it up 1-1. The Lady Raiders scored one run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Erica Buhl which sent home Phillips and picked up one more run in the bottom of the seventh Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to send home Michelle Wilkes.  


Freshman Valerie Swanson took the loss hurling three innings and allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two. Senior Phillips had a productive day in the second game, as she was 2-of-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.


Middle Tennessee will travel to Belmont on Monday for a double header with the Bruins. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Aquinas College.
