Purdue Blanks Blue Raiders, 7-0

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Purdue starter Mitch Pruemer allowed just two hits in seven innings and Chad Reeves went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, as the Boilermakers defeated Middle Tennessee, 7-0, Friday afternoon at Reese Smith Field.

The Boilermakers (5-3) got on the board with four runs in the first three innings, roughing up Blue Raider starter John Williams.

 

Purdue's Tyler Johnstone led off the contest with a single and later scored on a single to right by Reeves. Daniel Underwood scored the second run of the frame for PU on a sacrifice fly from Neal Gorke.

 

The Boilermakers added single runs in the second and third, as Klink Simon singled and went to second on a throwing error. Mitch Koester plated the run with a single before being thrown out trying to take second on the play.

 

Middle Tennessee (5-8) got just two hits off Pruemer (2-0) in seven innings. Pruemer struck out seven and walked two, throwing just 89 pitches. Dustin Glant struck out the side in the ninth to finish off the win for the Boilermakers.

 

The Blue Raiders finally had a scoring chance in the eighth, as Jeff Beachum singled and pinch-hitter Chris LeGuenec walked. But Chad Cooper lined out to end the inning with the Boilermakers holding a 4-0 advantage.

 

Purdue added to the lead in the ninth, with John Manuel doubling in a run and Underwood blooping a single over a drawn-in infield to score a pair and five PU a 7-0 lead.

 

Williams (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

 

Klink also had three hits for the winners, while Johnstone and Manuel each scored twice.

 

The Blue Raiders have now lost six of their last seven.

 

The two teams play the second of three games Saturday at 2 p.m. and conclude the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.

 

 

GAME NOTES

Marcus Taylor hit third and Brett Carroll hit fourth in the lineup for the first time this season ... Taylor doubled in the fourth, extending his hitting streak to five games ... Purdue reliever Brent Coudron allowed a single in the eighth to Jeff Beachum, his first hit allowed this season.
