Baseball Falls to Purdue
March 16, 2003 · MT Media RelationsJohn Manuel doubled and Daniel Underwood was hit by a pitch with one out in the first before Chad Reeves singled to score Manuel. Simon Klink then singled in Underwood before Nick McIntyre's two-run single made it 4-0 after a half inning.
Purdue added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly to right from Manuel before the Boilermakers expanded the lead in the third.
Brad Kriner singled to leadoff and John Hunter reached on an error. McIntyre's double off the rightfield wall plated both runners and Eric Wolfe followed with a single to right, chasing Horschel from the contest.
Mitch Koester greeted reliever Chris Mobley with an RBI single to right, and Andy Rempel doubled off the leftfield wall, missing a home run by about a foot, plating two runs for a 9-0 PU advantage.
Middle Tennessee (6-9) got on the board in the bottom of the third with back-to-back doubles to leadoff the inning from Jeff Beachum and Troy Harp. Harp tried to move to third on a ground ball to the shortstop, but Purdue third baseman Klink dropped the throw.
Boilermaker starter Chris Toneguzzi worked out of the jam, though, getting Chuck Akers to ground into a doubleplay and striking out Marcus Taylor to end the frame.
McIntyre drove in his fifth run of the contest with a leadoff home run in the fifth, a blast that landed on the football practice field. Rempel had an RBI triple in the inning and Manuel singled home Rempel for a 12-1 lead, chasing Mobley from the contest. Kriner added an RBI double later in the inning.
Shane Kemp's double and Jeff Beachum ground ball both scored runs in the sixth for the Blue Raiders.
Toneguzzi (1-0) picked up the win with five innings of work, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Jay Buente gave up two runs in one inning of work. Trae Dauby worked two scoreless innings before Jesse Krause got the final three outs for the Boilermakers.
Horschel (1-1) allowed nine runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings, striking out one. Mobley gave up four runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 2.0 innings before giving way to Shay Horseman. Horseman tossed 2.2 shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts for the Blue Raiders.
McIntyre went 3-for-5 with five RBIs to pace Purdue's 19-hit attack, while six other Boilermakers had two hits apiece. Kempel drove in three runs while Manuel scored twice and drove in a pair.
Carroll had two of Middle Tennessee's six hits in the contest.
The Blue Raiders play at Belmont on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before hosting Tennessee Tech Wednesday at Reese Smith Field at 3 p.m.
GAME NOTES
Jerry Knox made his second straight start at first base and in the cleanup spot in the order.
