Okafor Wins Twice; Byrd, Dupar-Scott Set PR's

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Sophomore Rosemary Okafor won both the 100 and 200m races, while freshman Meghan Byrd and sophomore Wesley Dupar-Scott both set personal-bests Saturday at a frigid and windy Mississippi State Invitational at the Carl Maddox Track in Starkville, Miss.

Okafor took the 100m in 11.75 and the 200m in 23.81 to post the only multiple-victory performance of the day for either Middle Tennessee squad. Kishara George also won for the Lady Raiders, while Dupar-Scott and Rob Jordan picked up wins for the Blue Raiders.

For the Lady Raiders, freshman Kerry Barrow finished third in both the 200 (25.10) and 400m (57.82), while Lanora Gray was fourth in the 400m (58.81) and George won the 400m intermediate hurdles (1:02.74) in her first try at the event in her career.

LaToya Brown took third in the 100m hurdles in 15.30, while Trisha DeValcourt was sixth in the 1500m in 5:15.02.

Byrd set a personal-best in the shot put with a mark of 43-6 and was seventh in the discus (108-5). Dara McLean finished seventh in the javelin (98-9) and Brown was eighth in the long jump (17-0.5).

For the Blue Raiders, Dupar-Scott set a personal-best in the 200m, winning in 21.34, while Omar Ali was sixth in the event in 21.84. Garland Martin also finished eighth in the 200m (22.40).

Dupar-Scott placed fourth in the 100m (10.76) and Ali was sixth in the event (11.00). Victor Okorie took second in the 400m (47.86) and Tim Hicks placed fifth (49.34).

Levi Sybert (4:01.50) and Anthony McGary (4:05.69) finished second and fifth, respectively, in the 1500m, while Linnie Yarbrough (14.66) and Martin (14.95) placed second and third, respectively, in the 110m hurdles. Jasper Demps placed seventh in the 400m high hurdles (59.23).

Edwin Koech placed third in the 3000m steeplechase (10:27.70).

Senior Rob Jordan won the long jump for the second week in a row, jumping 24-3.5 to defeat Arkansas State's Mesut Yavas by one inch. Yavas had not been beaten in the long jump this year except at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Freshman JJ Sturm placed seventh in the event with a mark of 22-4.5.

Freshman Willie Parker was fifth in the shot put with a mark of 44-8 and took eighth in the discus with a mark of 124-9.

Both squads will run next week at the Yellowjacket Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday.
