Lammers Inks With Phillies

June 7, 2001 · MT Media Relations

Kris Lammers became the fourth Blue Raider to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft on Wednesday when the Philadelphia Phillies chose him in the 24th round.

Lammers, who starred for the Blue Raiders as both a pitcher and first baseman, has been tabbed as a pitcher by the National League club.

The Manchester, Tenn., native went 3-6 on the year with a 4.98 ERA. He struck out a career high batters during the 2001 campaign including a career high 10-strikeout performance against Jacksonville State. He performed admirably as a hitter, too, batting .252 with a homer while splitting time at first.

The Phillies' selction of Lammers came as no surprise to those around the program.

"They were one of a couple of teams that seemed to keep tabs on me this year," said Lammers. "I'm very excited to get started. This is what I've been waiting on for 22 years. I want to go out there and show them that they made the right choice when they drafted me."

Head Coach Steve Peterson believes that Philadelphia made a wise pick when taking the left-hander.

"Kris has always been a competitor with a lot of heart. He has been a good player for us and his hard work has paid off with a chance to play pro ball," Peterson commented.

The Blue Raiders' crop of four players selected in the draft makes the 2001 class the largest since four players were selected in the MLB draft in 1990. Five players signed pro contracts following the 1997 season, but only one was with a Major League organization, the other four were with independent teams. In fact, only three times in Blue Raider history have four players signed MLB deals in one season: 1988, 1990, and 2001.

Catcher Kyle Thomas has signed an independent league contract with the Tennessee Tomahawks of Winchester and has begun playing games there. Lammers had also made an appearance with the team but his independent career will be cut short due to Wednesday's draft news.

In other draft news from Wednesday, Blue Raider signee Josh Archer, a catcher from Henry County High School, was taken in the 40th round by the San Diego Padres but is not expected to sign.
