Softball Falls to FIU in Sun Belt Tourney
May 8, 2003 · MT Media RelationsBOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Number 3 seeded Middle Tennessee (32-20) dropped the first game at the Sun Belt Tournament with a 2-1 loss to No. 2 seed Florida International (36-23) Thursday at WKU Softball Field.
With the game tied, 1-1, Michelle Dubovik hit an RBI single with runners at first and third, to score Amber Gill in the bottom of the seventh inning. FIU opened the inning with a double by Gill an single by Megan Dontrich.
Florida International got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning when an RBI double by Cindy Turek scored Stephanie Wolters.
Kip Phillips got things started for Middle Tennessee in the top of the sixth with a one out single, and then Cortney Mitchell singled to send Phillips to third base and advanced to second on the throw. The Lady Raiders tied the game 1-1 when a wild pitch by relief pitcher Nicole Barrett plated Phillips.
Senior hurler Stayc Preator picks up the loss and falls to 22-9 on the season. She allowed seven hits and struck out five.
Middle Tennessee will play No. 5 seed New Mexico State at 11 a.m. on Friday.
