Sybert, Sturm Qualify for Regionals

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's track squads competed Friday and Saturday at the Georgia Tech Last Chance Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., with senior Levi Sybert and freshman JJ Sturm both qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in two weeks.


Sybert ran a personal-best 9:10.14 in the 3000m steeplechase to qualify for the NCAA Mid-East Regional in Columbus, Ohio, at the end of the month. Sybert placed third while freshman Zack Wood finished eighth in the event in a season-best 9:36.30.


Sturm jumped 25-6 in the long jump to take third and also qualify in the event along with senior Rob Jordan. Sturm's best mark of the season had been 23-8 three weeks ago at the Murray State Invitational before his jump Friday night at the George C. Griffin Track & Field Facility on the Yellowjacket campus.


In running events late Saturday night, junior Mardy Scales had the top mark in the 100m qualifying at 10.32. Scales did not run in the event finals. Freshman Sean Waller had the third-fastest time and the top collegiate time in the 400m at 46.48.


In the 110m hurdles, junior Garland Martin ran a season-best 13.97 in the prelims before winning the event finals in 14.03. Senior Jasper Demps had the third-best prelim time before a season-best 14.11 in the finals placed him sixth.


The 4x100m relay of DJ Spann, Mardy Scales, Brad Orr and Pedro Holiday ran a season-best 39.81 to win the event.


Blue Raider graduate assistant Andrew Owusu won the triple jump on Saturday with a mark of 53-1.75.


The Blue Raiders have qualified 14 athletes in eight events as well as both relays for the NCAA Regional at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the Ohio State University campus set for May 30-31. The Lady Raiders have qualified three athletes in six events as well as both relays.


Athletes qualifying at the NCAA Regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships set for June 11-14 at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif., on the California State-Sacramento campus.
