Scales Wins 100, Relay Second
May 31, 2003 · MT Media RelationsMURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Middle Tennessee's Mardy Scales won the 100-meters and the 4x100-meter relay team finished second during the final day of competition at the NCAA Mideast Regional in Columbus, Ohio.
Scales won the 100 in a wind-aided 10.02, more than two-tenths faster than the school record.
The 4x100-meter relay team of DJ Spann, Scales, Brad Orr and Pedro Holiday took second in 39.85, just behind winner LSU.
Victor Okorie placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 50.85, while Spann finished fifth in the event in 52.03.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Okorie, Fred Williams, Tim Hick and Sean Waller finished fourth in 3:10.98.
The Blue Raider men finished fifth as a team among an extremely strong field.
For the Lady Raiders, Rosemary Okafor took fifth in the 400-meters in 54.17, while Kishara George placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.32.
In the individual events, anyone finishing in the top five qualifield for the NCAA Championships, set for June 11-14 on the Cal-State Sacramento at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif. In the realy events, the top three squads automatically qualify.
A small group of top finishers who did not automatically qualify will also advance to the NCAA Championships, and that group will find out Monday.
