Blue Raiders come out firing
Golfers in fourth through two rounds in LouisvilleSeptember 18, 2006 · MT Media Relations
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Middle Tennessee women's golf team shot 607 through two rounds of the Napa River Grill Cardinal here Monday and is in fourth place in the 13-team field heading into Tuesday's final round.
Three Blue Raiders - Taryn Durham (T4 - 147), Maggie McGill (T12 - 151), and Clara Leathers (T15 - 152) - are among the Top 15 individuals through two rounds after putting together a solid day on the links that turned both long and rainy; however, Middle Tennessee golfers wouldn't allow it to affect their play.
"That's what pleases me most; I was very glad to see we have a strong team when it comes to the last 18 holes," Middle Tennessee head coach Rachel Short said. "It's the first tournament of the fall and it's easy to get tired after playing the first round and immediately starting the second, and then it started raining but we didn't let those things bother us. We came out and put up a good score in the first round and we did the same in the second."
Middle Tennessee opened with a 303 in the first round and followed with a 304 in the second to come in six strokes behind third-place UNC-Wilmington (601). Host Louisville leads the field with a 587, five strokes ahead of second-place Augusta State.
Durham led Middle Tennessee with a 147 through the first two rounds and finds herself just four shots off the tournament lead held by Louisville's Jenny Calkins (143). Durham's strong play in the second round put her in position to make a run Tuesday. After shooting a 76 in the opening round, the junior standout sparkled in the second round as she responded with 1-under 71. Durham shot par or better on 15 holes in the second round.
McGill was very consistent through her two rounds, firing a 76 in the first round and a 75 in the second to put herself in position for a Top 10 finish out of the gates. McGill shot 1-over on the final nine holes of the second round to lead a strong charge. Freshman Clara Leathers also made quite a splash in her collegiate debut with rounds of 75 and 78 to start the final round tied for 15th overall. Mallory Bishop shot a 157 and Leigh Wilkins rounded out the scoring with a 161.
"I'm very proud of Taryn and the way she came back in the second round with the 71," Short said. "Maggie made some puts and played well. She really hung in there down the stretch and finished strong for me, and Clara played awesome her first time out."
