MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Sara Lunning and Marjorie Gombert both finished in the Top 10, leading the women to a second-place team finish, and William Songock placed second overall in his first collegiate race to pace the Middle Tennessee cross country teams at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., Saturday.

Lunning, a senior, and Gombert, a junior, were sixth and eighth, respectively, at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park Saturday morning in the Blue Race, their highest career finishes at Middle Tennessee. The women had five places in the Top 50 overall for a second-place team finish.

Lunning paced the squad in 19:39.04 on the 5K course, with Gombert right behind in 19:45.14. Freshman Sangau Zamzam was 19th in 20:12.80, while sophomore Tiffany Sawyer finished 37th in 20:41.76 and sophomore Ashleigh Thaler was 48th in 20:57.01.

Sophomore Ashley Comstock, in her first race of the season after suffering an ankle injury warming up for the first meet, finished in 21:40.40, with sophomore Catherine Chester crossing the finish line in 22:02.21. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hammond, in her first competitive event since January's hit-and-run accident in Murfreesboro, finished in 22:18.98.

"Sara Lunning had probably her best race since she's been at Middle Tennessee," head coach Dean Hayes said. "And Marjorie ran well again. The big thing was just getting Ashley and Kaitlyn back running. I was very happy to see them competing very satisfied with our overall team effort, both men and women."

Songock was spectacular in his first race for the Blue Raiders, completing the 8K course in 25:13.94. Senior Tony Carufe placed 44th in 28:03.64, with junior Matthew Young 81st in 28:54.81.

Freshmen Chris Travis and Philip Benavides rounded out the top five in 88th and 94th, respectively, with times of 29:04.94 and 29:12.61. Sophomores Luke Pfleger (30:33.58) and Ryan Hood (31:19.49) placed 120th and 126th, respectively, in a race with 197 competitors.

"William was excellent in his first race. He's a stud," Hayes said. "And Chris Travis was solid and Matt Young ran very well also."

Middle Tennessee returns to action in two weeks, October 14, at the UTC Invitational on the Moccasin Bend Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Sun Belt Championships follow that meet on September 28 in Little Rock, Ark.
