Blue Raiders Begin Soccer Practice

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Twenty-five players, including 10 newcomers, began workouts Tuesday morning at the Blue Raider Soccer Field, as head coach Aston Rhoden begins his second season at the helm of the Blue Raider program.

The players began the day with a 6:30 a.m. run and skills workouts before practicing two-plus hours later in the morning. The squad finished up with a two-hour workout late in the afternoon and will follow the three-times-a-day schedule for the rest of the week.

Players worked in small groups on ball possession and positioning for much of the day before finishing the final practice with a short 80-yard field scrimmage.

"The practices were good for the first day, and I was very pleased we came out of it with no injuries," Rhoden said. "The camaraderie and team chemistry was very good, especially with so many new players.

"The fitness level for the freshman is good, not great, and the returning players all picked up where they left off, not stellar but with everyone above average.

"Rebecca Rodriguez and Katy Rayburn did well for the freshmen, as did Claire Ward, who is still trying to get used to the heat and humidity coming from Scotland. I also thought Sara Wohlhueter played very solid and simple."

Rhoden and the Blue Raiders play an exhibition match versus Louisville on August 23 in Huntsville, Ala., before opening the regular season at home against Belmont on August 31.
