Trio of Doubles Teams Win at Regionals

Senior Sufi plays in main draw doubles Friday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - All three Middle Tennessee doubles tandems won their opening-round matches Thursday at the ITA Southeast Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., in the first indoor action of the year for the Blue Raiders.

Middle Tennessee sophomore Pooja Kommireddi and freshman Stephanie Parkison defeated Liberty's Ekaterina Kuznetsova and Jonaita Randolph, 8-2, and will take on Clemson's fifth-seeded Ani Mijacika and Carolina Salge.

Also in the Round of 64, senior Hala Sufi and junior Claudia Szabo won 9-7 against Longwood's Romana Bucur and Elena Triebskorn and will face Clemson's Selma Babic and Federica van Adrichem on Friday.

Middle Tennessee sophomore Marlene Chemin and Ann-Kristin Siljestrom defeated East Tennessee's Olya Batsula and Tara Byrne, 9-7, as well, and play Duke's Kristen Cargill and Jenny Zika on Friday.

Szabo and Siljestrom did not fare as well Thursday morning in qualifying singles, both dropping straight-set decisions.

Szabo lost to Davidson's Michele Fanney, 6-7 (3), 3-6, while Siljestrom dropped a 4-6, 5-7, decision to Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey.

Sufi will face Duke's Parker Goyer at 10:30 a.m. ET Friday in main draw singles. Goyer won twice in qualifying Thursday to make the main draw field of 64.
