MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's Hala Sufi pulled off two big upsets Saturday, defeating a pair of ranked players to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Sufi defeated Wake Forest's 32nd-ranked Alexandra Hirsch in the Round of 32, 6-2, 7-5, Saturday morning. The Blue Raider senior then outlasted North Carolina's 117th-ranked Austin Smith in the afternoon, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

"Hala just played unbelievable in the first match and continued her good play in the second match," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We've worked very hard on her game since the start of the semester and all of the hard work is really paying off."

Sufi takes on Clemson's 45th-ranked Carolina Salge in the quarterfinals Sunday. She would again need to win two matches on Sunday to make the tournament finals. The ITA Southeast Championships serve as the qualifying event for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships set for November 2-5 in Columbus, Ohio.

In doubles Sufi and Claudia Szabo did not dare as well early Saturday, dropping an 8-1 decision to Wake Forest's fifth-seeded Ana Jerman and Christian Tara in the Round of 16.
