MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Senior Hala Sufi picked up one singles victory and a pair of doubles teams posted victories, leading the Middle Tennessee contingent at the June Stewart Invitational on a cold and blustery Friday in Nashville, Tenn.

Sufi won her first singles match of the day, defeating Arizona State's 104th-ranked Rebecca Rankin, 6-4, 6-1, but later dropped a 5-7, 1-6, decision to Louisville's Maria Klokotsky. Sufi will face Vanderbilt's Catherine Newman in the round-robin format Saturday.

The Blue Raiders had just one other singles victory Friday, a 6-0, 6-3, triumph by Elvira Yusupova over Vanderbilt's Caroline Ferrell. Yusupova later lost 4-6, 4-6, to Louisville's Jo Ann Van aard and will take on Florida International's Priscilla Castillo Saturday.

Junior Claudia Szabo struggled through a pair of losses, but switching to a two-handed forehand just five days ago will take its toll. Szabo dropped a 0-6, 2-6, decision to Vandy's Courtney Ulery and later a 0-6, 0-6, decision to Arizona State's Nadia Abdula. Szabo will face Florida International's Shilla D'Armas Saturday.

Junior Ann-Kristin Siljestrom dropped both of her matches, but in very different ways. Siljestrom lost 2-6, 0-6, to Vanderbilt's 17th-ranked Amanda Fish Friday morning and came back with a 3-6, 6-1, 2-6, defeat to Florida International's Egle Petrauskite in the afternoon. Siljestrom plays Arizona State's 50th-ranked Roxanne Clark Saturday.

Sophomore Pooja Kommireddi started strong but eventually dropped a 3-6, 3-6, decision to Louisville's Bianca Gorbera in the morning. Kommireddi turned her ankle and retired down 2-4 to Murray State's Rachael Lask in the afternoon. She is scheduled to take on Vanderbilt's Hannah Blatt Saturday.

Sophomore Marlene Chemin lost both of her matches as well, the second one in three sets. Chemin dropped a 1-6, 0-6, decision to Florida International's Maria Vallasciani in the morning before losing 6-7 (9), 3-6, 1-6, to Louisville's Natalie Baez in the afternoon. Chemin is scheduled to face Arizona State's Amanda Martin Saturday.

Freshman Stephanie Parkison lost both of her outings Friday as well, 4-6, 1-6, to Arizona State's Laila Abdala in the morning and 1-6, 2-6, to Vanderbilt's Liberty Sveke in the afternoon. Parkison will face Florida International's Maria Pazo on Saturday.

In doubles Sufi-Szabo defeated Florida International's Paula Zabala and Castillo, 8-4, while Siljestrom-Chemin won 8-4 as well against Vandy's Taka Bertrand-Ferrell.

Yusupova stepped in for Kommireddi after her injury, playing with Parkison in an 8-2 loss to Vanderbilt's Blatt-Newman.

The tournament continues with one singles and two doubles matches Saturday, with action beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr., Tennis Center.
