Season Opening Week Full of Activities

August 22, 2003 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn.--The week leading up to Middle Tennessee's football opener against Florida Atlantic is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated in recent memory.

On Monday, the week begins with the Southern Sports Tonight radio show, hosted by Scott McKinney and Max Howell, originating from the Bunganut Pig from 5-8 PM. The show can be heard live locally on 560 AM WNSR from 6-8 PM.

Tuesday will be a big day for the Blue Raider program from a broadcast perspective. Greg Pogue and Dave Coleman will host their sports call-in show The Morning Sports Page on 560 AM WNSR at Shoney's Restaurant on Church Street from 6-9 AM. The Bunganut Pig will once again be a broadcast center that evening, this time for the premier edition of Andy Mac Live from 7-8 PM.

"We really hope that all of these activities will help build a great atmosphere for our home opener," said Assistant AD for Marketing and Promotions Mark Meadows. "We really think that these promotions will help the community realize that we have a quality product at Middle Tennessee and that they will want to come back to watch other games throughout the year."

Game day will see a flurry of activity around campus leading up to kickoff at 7 PM.

Leading off the afternoon, 99.7 FM WWTN's Sports Night program with Pete Webber, Blake Fulton, and Joe Biddle will broadcast from the area between the Murphy Center and the Greenland Drive parking lot from 4-7 PM.

First Tennessee Bank, in conjunction with the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, is hosting Business After Hours from 5 to 6:30 PM in the area between the Murphy Center and the Greenland Drive parking lot. The event will also feature the Busch Racing Series no. 77 car, which is sponsored by First Tennessee Bank and driven by Dave Blaney, on display.

Leading up to the game, the Blue Raider Network will debut The Applebee's Big Blue Kickoff Show at 5:30 PM. Neil Price and Duane Hickey will host the one-hour call-in program from the tailgating area near Peck Hall on the MT campus. Price and Hickey will return to the airwaves approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the contest with a one-hour call-in wrap up show. The Crockett's Roadhouse Raider Wrap-up Show will air at Crockett's Roadhouse Restaurant.

Tailgating in both the Greenland Drive lot and the area between Peck Hall and the Cope Administration Building will be in full swing prior to the game, with several Greek organizations setting up their tailgating areas in the Peck Hall area.

With all of the promotions leading up to kickoff, the game itself will be the centerpiece of the week.

The game's presenting sponsor, First Tennessee Bank, will give a blue Middle Tennessee t-shirt to the first 11,000 fans through the Floyd Stadium gates. The t-shirt giveaway is part of a large effort to encourage Blue Raider fans to fill the stadium with Blue on game night.

Head Coach Andy McCollum said, "One of the things we have said since coming to Middle Tennessee is that we wanted to see Floyd Stadium filled up with Blue-wearing fans. We really hope that our great fans will put on their Blue for this game and make sure that we have a home field advantage against Florida Atlantic."

Also, the athletic department, in conjunction with the Student Government Association, is attempting to establish a new student attendance record. If the old record is broken, each student in attendance will receive a coupon for free food from Jack in the Box. Other contests and prizes will be going on throughout the game for students.

With all of the fun and activities taking place on campus on game day, parking is going to be at a premium.

"We certainly want our fans and other visitors to campus on Thursday to be aware that classes are in session and parking in any of the campus lots will be in high demand," said Athletic director Boots Donnelly. "We are trying to make the parking situation as easy on everyone as possible, but we are limited on the number of available spaces. We are encouraging everyone to check our website for the most up-to-date information on gameday parking in an effort to reduce the number of problems that might occur that evening."

Detailed information on the parking situation can be found here.
