Lagat placed second in the meet in a time of 15:31 on the 5k course, trailing only Auburn's Andrew Heath by three seconds. Freshman David Hughes came in 25th (16:33), while freshman Zack Wood was 43rd (17:08). Another newcomer, freshman Anthony Carufe, finished 54th (17:47), and sophomore Carlos Gonzales was 57th (18:19).
"Geoffrey ran really well and David ran well for his first college experience," head coach Dean Hayes said. "He got a few lessons about running in college.
"Zack also ran well the second half of the race."
For the Lady Raiders, freshman Kim Alsobrook placed 45th (14:21) on the two-mile course, junior Erin Russell was 48th (14:32) and freshman Lauren Milbourn finished 49th (14:45). Freshman Jo Marie Thaggard came in 51st (15:06) and sophomore Kerry Barrow rounded out the Middle Tennessee contingent in 63rd (19:25).
"All the girls ran OK. We have a really young group with basically no experience, and we were missing Candis Montgomery today."
Both the men and women are scheduled to run again September 13 at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
