MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee head coach Andy McCollum welcomed 33 newcomers to campus today for the start of fall practice. The varsity players will report on Monday.

Regarded as the top class in the Sun Belt Conference by most analysts, the 2001 class will go through physicals and be sized for equipment before hitting the field for the first time Saturday morning.

"I was happy to see all these guys check-in today," McCollum said. "This is an excellent class and I believe we have some guys who can step in and help us right away. They all look great, but we will get a better idea once they hit the field tomorrow."

Local standouts Brett Trott and Alvin Fite were among those who reported on Friday. Trott, who played last year for Oakland High School in Murfreesboro, was a 5A All-State selection and a Mr. Football finalist. Fite, out of Nashville's Hillsboro High School, was the 2000 Class 4A Defensive Player of the Year.

Also reporting to camp was the nation's No. 4 rated tight end in Quan Domineck (Ellenwood, GA), Mr. Football finalist Blake Morris (Cleveland, TN), NJCAA All-American Reggie Jones (Atlanta, GA), junior college transfer and sack specialist Samuel Smith (Moss Point, MS), and pass rusher Demetrios Walker (Kansas City, MO). NJCAA All-American defensive back Jonathan Shaw, who tallied 18 interceptions in two years for NW Mississippi, also reported along with one of Tennessee's top prep receivers in Chris Henry (Kingsport, TN).

Several players in this class, who have already been spending time on campus and going through the summer workout program, joined their teammates today at check-in. The list includes Shawn Allen (LaGrange, GA), Nathan Blasi (Wichita, KS), Bill Brasch (Jones, OK), Julius Gant (Atlanta, GA), Thomas Johnson (Memphis, TN), Rashard Lee (Brunswick, GA), and Preston Portley (Kansas City, KS).

The freshmen will go through two practices on Saturday with the first one starting at 9:10 AM and the second workout beginning at 5:10 PM. The newcomers will take the field once on Sunday (5:10 PM).
