October 12, 2003 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Rebecca Rodriguez scored the first and last goals and Laura Miguez added two assists, leading Middle Tennessee to a 4-0 victory over Arkansas State Sunday afternoon in Jonesboro, Ark.

The Blue Raiders (8-5-0, 3-0-0 SBC) won their fourth straight match and third consecutive Sun Belt tilt. Middle Tennessee last won four-in-a-row in 1999, when the club started the season with five straight victories. The Blue Raiders have also started Sun Belt play 3-0-0 for the first time in school history and have won three consecutive conference matches only once before, at the end of the 1998 campaign while in the OVC.

The Blue Raiders and Indians (4-9-0, 0-4-0) battled to a scoreless tie for much of the first half until Miguez scored unassisted in the 36th minute, her sixth of the season. Miguez then fed Rodriguez in the 39th minute for another score, giving Middle Tennessee a 2-0 advantage at the half.

Again the two squads could not find the net until late in the second half when senior Emily Carter netted her sixth goal of the season and fourth in the last three matches, giving the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead in the 87th minute.

Twenty-six seconds later Rodriguez tallied the final score on an assist from Miguez, giving the Blue Raiders their seventh shutout of the year and fourth consecutive blanking, all by sophomore keeper Danielle Perreault.

The Blue Raiders also won their third straight road match for the second time in school history, equaling the total number of road wins all of last season for the club. Middle Tennessee won three consecutive matches away from home during the 2001 season, though the three wins were a month apart. The seven shutouts also mark another school record, surpassing the six shutouts posted by the 1998 squad.

The Blue Raiders return home next weekend to face the top two teams in the Sun Belt, hosting North Texas Friday at 3 p.m. and Denver Sunday at 1 p.m., both at Blue Raider Field.
