Kuruppu Wins Consolation Draw

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's Rishan Kuruppu won twice Saturday and again on Sunday, all in straight sets, to take the consolation draw at the Beau Holtan Memorial Invitational in New Orleans, La.

Kuruppu defeated Belmont's Felipe Lima, 6-1, 6-2, and Belmont's Michael Moretti, 6-4-, 6-2, Saturday to reach the finals at the Goldring Tennis Stadium on the Tulane campus. On Sunday the junior took care of LSU's Danny Bryan, 6-2, 6-4.

In other singles action, after winning twice on Friday, senior Trevor Short won his first match Saturday, 6-2, 6-1, over UNO's Pierre Ros-Barbier before falling in the semifinals of the main draw, 0-6, 6-4, 5-7, to USM's Danny Canudas late Saturday.

Also in singles, senior Kirk Jackson lost his second match of the tournament to Tulane's Max Lacroix, 6-7, 1-6, and junior Greg Pollack dropped a 3-6, 5-7, decision to Moretti, both on Saturday.

In doubles play, Andreas Siljestrom and Kuruppu defeated USM's Thomas Funke and Juanjo Martin, 8-5, before falling to LSU's Bryan and Cory Ross, 7-9, on Saturday. Brandon Allan and Kai Schledorn defeated Tulane's Lacroix and Hannu Piiroinen, 8-6, Saturday, before dropping a 3=8 decision to Bryan and Ross in the semifinals on Sunday.

Also in doubles, Pollack and Anant Sitaram lost 8-9 (6) to Tulane's David Goulet and Patrizio Maucci on Saturday. Jackson and Short defeated Belmont's Moretti and Matt Fitzpatrick, 8-4, before taking care of Goulet and Maucci, 9-7, in the semifinals Sunday. The duo lost 5-8 to Bryan and Ross in the finals Sunday afternoon.

The tournament concludes fall action for the Blue Raiders. The squad opens the dual match season January 24 at home against Indiana at the Racquet Club in Murfreesboro.
