Soccer Scores 4-0 Victory
November 2, 2003 · MT Media RelationsThe Blue Raiders (11-6-2, 5-1-2 SBC) set a school-record for victories in a season and also finish tied for third in the Sun Belt, the best in school history.
Neither team played well in the first half, especially the Blue Raiders, who created few scoring chances fighting Lafayette's high offsides trap.
Early in the second half the Blue Raiders started to find the seams in the Ragin' Cajun (6-12-1, 2-6-0) defense and get opportunities.
Middle Tennessee finally converted one of the chances in the 58th minute when Rachel Holmes took a long ball from Katy Rayburn, beat her defender down the leftside and scored for a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders made it 2-0 in the 70th minute when Jenny Cox's header off a corner from Rachel Holmes crossed the goal line before being cleared away.
Middle Tennessee continued to attack and scored again 11 minutes later when Laura Miguez's shot from 25 yards away was saved by Cajun keeper Anna Brannon, but Sarah Linder was on the doorstep to put in the rebound for a 3-0 Blue Raider advantage.
The final goal was a special one for junior Danielle LaDuke, who took a feed from Miguez and beat the keeper low and left for her first goal of the season.
The Blue Raiders took 13 shots in the second half and six of their seven corners after the break.
The Blue Raiders open play in the Sun Belt Championships Wednesday, probably against Arkansas-Little Rock. The full bracket comes out Monday at noon.
