Scales Wins 60, Women Take Third in Relay at UK

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's Mardy Scales won the 60-meters and the women's 4x400-meter relay team finished third Saturday during the second and final day of competition at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky.

Scales won the 60-meters at UK for the second year in a row at Nutter Fieldhouse, besting the field with an NCAA provisional time of 6.63. Scales' time should get him into the NCAA Championships in March, as the Franklin, Tenn., native finished one-hundredth from an automatic qualifying mark. He ran 6.68 in the preliminaries, also the top time in the prelims.

The women's relay of Kerry Barrow, Contrena Brown, Kishara George and Rosemary Okafor placed third with a time of 3:43.08.

The men's A relay was battling South Carolina on the last leg when Sean Waller and the USC sprinter got tangled up and both went to the ground. The B relay of Wesley Dupar-Scott, Garland Martin, Linnie Yarbrough and Scales came in seventh in 3:19.28.

Sophomore Linnie Yarbrough finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 7.50 after running 7.93 in the preliminaries. Senior Xavier Darden ran 6.81 in the 60-meter prelims and finished seventh in the finals in 6.82.

Waller placed third in the 400-meters in 47.36 while senior Tim Hicks was seventh in the event in 47.89. In the 200-meters, Scales came in third (21.26) and Darden was ninth (21.59).

In the field events, sophomore JJ Sturm placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 23-6.

For the Lady Raiders, freshman Nicole Marcus came in seventh in the 60-meters in 7.67 after running 7.59 in the prelims.

Sophomore Greg Jones had the best showing for the Blue Raiders on Friday night, finishing second in the triple jump with a mark of 48-11.75. Newcomer Clyde Gibson jumped 44-10.75 in the event.

For the Lady Raiders, senior Letitia Eady placed eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 37-9.5, while Rolanda Howard jumped 36-11.75 in the event.

Also Friday night, Katie Mirgliotta (45-1.75) and Meaghan Byrd (45-0.5) as well as James Thomas (49-9) and Willie Parker (39-11.5) participated in the weight throw.

The two-day invitational featured a much larger contingent of SEC teams due to Kentucky hosting the SEC Indoor Championships next month.

Both squads will participate in the Blue Raider Invitational next Saturday at Murphy Center.
