ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Perhaps Middle Tennessee golfer Chas Narramore didn't accomplish the ultimate goal he sought during the NCAA East Regional at The Golf Club of Georgia this week, but he achieved what he set out to do in the final round of the 54-hole event Saturday.
After two frustrating rounds to open the tournament, Narramore closed with a 1-under 71 and climbed more than 20 spots to finish in a tie for 71st with a three-day total 11-over 227 as the first Blue Raider golfer to earn an invitation into the NCAA Golf Championships as an individual at the Division I level.
"I had hoped to play much better during the week and post scores that would give me a chance to advance going to the final round but it didn't work out that way," Narramore said. "If I could have played the first two rounds like I did Saturday's round I would have given myself a better chance. This was a good learning experience and it was great to be able to represent the Middle Tennessee golf team."
Narramore's 71 Saturday was one of the top 20 rounds posted among the 141-player field. It followed a 76 on Thursday and an 80 on Friday. The difference in the final round was Narramore's ability to leave himself in better position on the greens - and then he delivered.
He was 1-under on the front nine after posting pars on the first two holes, followed by a bogey, and four more pars in succession, before closing with birdies on eight and nine. With momentum at the turn, Narramore came back with five straight pars on the back before knocking in a birdie putt on the par-4 15. After going par, double bogey on 16 and 17, Narramore finished with a par on 18 and was even on the back.
"I'm proud of the way Chas battled back today, but I'm not surprised," Middle Tennessee golf coach Johnny Moore said. "He played with a lot of composure throughout the tournament and it was good for him to close with such a solid round. He will be better because he was here. This young man has a bright future at Middle Tennessee."
