Football Camp Notebook (#22)August 17, 2001 · MT Media Relations
(following today's practice on Aug. 17)
ANDY MCCOLLUM ON THE MORNING PRACTICE: "Their attitude has been good. They are sore and beat up right now, but we have some that know how to fight through it and some that need to learn how to fight through it and they have not learned that yet. Up to this point they have responded, but they have to continue striving to get better."
HONORING GILLESPIE: Head Coach Andy McCollum and the Blue Raider football team will be honoring the late Cliff Gillespie this season by wearing the initials "CG" on the back of their helmets. Gillespie, a long-time supporter of Blue Raider football and a close friend to McCollum, was the school's associate vice president for enrollment management when he retired. Gillespie recently past away after a four-year battle with cancer. "He was such a great man and a Middle Tennessee man," McCollum said. "He truly loved this university and the athletic program. You can not put into words what he meant. After last season, when we had the winning record, one of the first cards I received was from Cliff Gillespie. The front of it said "Passion". He congratulated us and was so excited about what was happening. It is on my board to this day because of what he and his family means to our university and this community. I could not think of any better honor than to have our players wear his initials on our helmets because of his character and what he meant to our program."
