Blue Raider Soccer Finishes First Week of Practice

August 19, 2001 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee Blue Raider soccer team finished its first week of practice Sunday morning with a scrimmage at Lady Raider Field on the MT campus before taking off the afternoon and Monday for the beginning of classes.

Second-year head coach Scott Ginn and his squad practiced 16 times this past week, a big necessity with 15 newcomers to add to the mix of 13 veterans.

Several Blue Raiders suffered injuries and were not able to practice all or part of the week, but the almost two full days of rest should help several of the bumps and bruises heal and see many return to practice Tuesday. Among the walking wounded for the Blue Raiders: junior Tiffany Moore has a stress fracture in her left shin and is in a walking cast for the next couple of weeks; freshman Ashley Hicks is suffering from shin splints but should return in the next few days; senior Rachael Sulkers suffered a toe injury on her right foot in Saturday evening's team scrimmage and will have an X-ray done on Monday to rule out a fracture; freshman Megan Schwanke practiced off-and-on all week after suffering a hip flexor of her right leg; freshman Erin Kaye has a high ankle sprain on the right foot and is in a walking boot; freshman Sarah Linder has a right knee contusion; and freshman Nikki Fell has a large contusion on the back of her left knee.

Many other players are suffering from soreness and blisters from practicing so much in such a short period of time, but the week's work went well according to Ginn.

"We had two scrimmages at the end of the week. I think things look good where we are, especially with so many new players," Ginn said. "The veteran players have done a good job meshing with all the young players. I'm really proud of the veterans and how they have handled the situation with the coaching staff really raising the bar in regards to fitness and quality of play. All of them have really stepped up and done a good job.

"The new players have come in and done well, picked up the system pretty well. Many of the freshmen are going to contribute, and I'm really looking forward to playing in the next couple of weeks."

The Blue Raiders open the season with a pair of contests on the road in the Southern Miss Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss. MT takes on the host Golden Eagles on Friday, August 31, at 5 p.m., then take on Nicholls State on Sunday, September 2 at 1 p.m. Ginn's squad opens home play on Saturday, September 8, with a 3 p.m. contest against Jacksonville State preceding the football home-opener against Troy State.
