Threlkeld racks up honors following big weekend
Earns Sun Belt Player of Week; Soccer Buzz Elite Team of WeekSeptember 11, 2007 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee sophomore forward Jen Threlkeld was honored by the Sun Belt Conference, as well as a national publication, following her five-goal weekend against Tulsa and Mississippi State in the Middle Tennessee Classic.
Threlkeld was named the Sun Belt's Player of the Week and she was also named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week Tuesday after scoring one goal in a 3-1 win against Tulsa Friday and four goals, including the game winner, in a 5-4 win against Mississippi State Sunday. She was one of five forwards nationally to earn a spot on the Soccer Buzz Elite Team this week.
Threlkeld was named the Classic's Offensive MVP after collecting 10 points in the two wins. The Carrollton, Texas native scored three of her four goals against Mississippi State in the second half to rally the Blue Raiders from a 2-1 halftime deficit.
"Jen had a remarkable weekend but she is capable of having some big matches," Middle Tennessee coach Aston Rhoden said. "She is really fully healthy for the first time as a Blue Raider and you saw what she is capable of (Sunday) when she is at full strength. It's good to see her making such an impact this early in the season."
Threlkeld tied the Middle Tennessee single-game record for goals (4), and tied for second on the single-game points (8) list. She enjoyed a solid rookie season with eight goals and nine assists despite playing sparingly in 16 matches. The 25 points were the third-highest single-season output ever for a freshman and the 35 points in her first 20 career matches are good for 10th on the all-time list at Middle Tennessee.
"My teammates did a great job setting me up for some nice looks against Mississippi State and I was able to knock them through," Threlkeld said. "I have to credit my teammates for giving me balls in position to score. That was the key and I'm glad I was able to come through for the team because it was a big win for us."
Threlkeld presently leads the Sun Belt in points and goals per game heading into Friday night's match at Alabama.
