Lady Raiders Split at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Middle Tennessee softball (9-7) split in the final day of action at the Evansville Tournament, defeating Ball State 9-6 and falling to host Evansville 3-2.

The Lady Raiders finished the weekend with a sweep over Ball State, defeating them 9-6 on Sunday and 13-7 on Saturday. Senior Cortney Mitchell led the team, as she was 3-of-2 with one run and one RBI.

After scoring one run in the bottom of the first, the Lady Raiders exploded in the second inning for six runs. Senior catcher led the charge with a grand-slam homerun.

In the nightcap, Middle Tennessee dropped its second one-run game of the two-game series with Evansville. After falling behind 1-0 to start the game, the Lady Raiders took the lead in the bottom of the third inning off an RBI double by Leah Grothause and a sacrifice fly by Mitchell.

Evansville tied the game in the top of the sixth off an RBI single by Brooke Luker. The Purple Aces clinched the game when Kim Nichols hit a homerun in the top of the seventh inning to give Evansville the 3-2 win.

The Lady Raiders will head back out onto the road on Friday when the team competes in the Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech. Middle Tennessee is slated to open the tournament with Georgia State at 11 a.m. in Atlanta, Georgia.
