Softball Advances With Win Over NMSU

May 15, 2001 · MT Media Relations
LAS CRUCES, NM--Lisa Sherman went 4-for-4 and Jennifer Martinez threw a three-hitter as the Middle Tennessee softball team advanced with a first round win in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament over host New Mexico State, 3-2.

The Lady Raiders took an early lead scoring a run in the top of the first but could have had more.

After a lead-off walk by Kip Phillips and a double by Lisa Sherman, the Lady Raiders were able to load the bases with no outs when Erica Buhl reached on an error.

However, Jennifer Martinez lined into a double play to the shortstop. Aggie second basemen Jennifer Lazano suffered a sprained knee when Sherman dove back into second and Phillips seeing Lazano down tagged up from third scoring the Lady Raiders first run.

Middle Tennessee took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the third on an infield single by Lindsay Azevedo. Jennifer Polsteen, attempting to score from second, crossed the plate as Aggie pitcher Amber Mosher's throw sailed into the back stop.

NMSU tied the score in the bottom of the sixth on two Middle Tennessee errors. The Aggies had bases loaded with no outs, but Martinez was able to subdue the rally allowing only one run.

The Lady Raiders responded in the top half of the seventh inning stringing together three straight hits from Phillips, Sherman, and Erica Buhl, who drilled a double down the leftfield line plating Phillips for a 3-2 lead.

"Our defense has stepped up most of the season," head coach Karen Green said. "But today it was out offense."

Sherman's three singles and double marked her first four-hit game of her career at Middle Tennessee.

"We tried some visualization techniques with Mark (Mattson) before the game," said Sherman. "And it worked. I'm a believer in it now."

Martinez registered eight strikeouts in the game with one walk and did not allow an earned run.

"A big key was that we kept the lead-off hitter off the bases in six of the seven innings, Green said. "The one inning they scored was when they got their lead-off on."

The Lady Raiders will face FIU in the winners bracket at 3:00 p.m. (MDT). FIU defeated Louisiana Tech 8-0. The two team's split their four-game series in Murfreesboro.
