NICEVILLE, Fla. - The Middle Tennessee women's golf team opened the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Championships with a 317 to stand in fourth place after 18 holes at the Bluewater Bay Resort golf course. The Lady Raiders are just seven shots back of third place Arkansas State. Denver owns the overall lead with a 302 followed by New Mexico State with a 303.
"For the opening day, I am pretty pleased with our positioning," head coach Rachael Moore said. "I thought we came out and played a pretty good front nine, then we left a few shots out on the course. There's a lot of golf left to be played and I expect us to do a little better as the tournament progresses." Freshman Maggie McGill led the Lady Raider charge with a 75 to jump into a tie for sxith overall, while teammate Tamara Munsch-Akers is tied for ninth after recording a 77.
Junior Kristin Lynch fired a 79 to tie for 19th and Kemmerlee Pennington registered an 86 to tie for 35th. Freshman Jenny Kim had an 87 and is tied for 39th.
The second round of the 54-hole event will get underway at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning with the final round being played on Wednesday.
