Blue Raiders Prepared for Top Competition
No. 50 Middle Tennessee set for two ranked opponents this weekendFebruary 7, 2008 · MT Media Relations
Middle Tennessee has received a high ranking after defeating No. 66 Denver and No. 40 Minnesota last week. Middle Tennessee is currently 50th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll released on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
The Blue Raiders will face more top-notch competition this weekend. Middle Tennessee will play host to No. 55 New Mexico on Saturday, Feb. 9. Then on Sunday, Feb. 10 the Blue Raiders will face No. 48 East Tennessee.
"This is a great opportunity to play to great teams at home. We lost to ETSU last year and they are a strong team again this year. New Mexico is a good team as well," head coach David McNamara said.
Thus far this season Middle Tennessee has seen impressive performances from its younger players. Freshman Richard Cowden is leading the Blue Raiders with his 5-1 record. The Durban, South Africa, native has defeated competition from Michigan State, Minnesota and No. 35 Virginia Tech just to name a few. Cowden was the only Middle Tennessee player to post a win over the Hokies.
Freshman John Peers has also helped guide the team with his 4-2 record. Peers has defeated players from UT-Chattanooga, Indiana State, Michigan State and Minnesota.
"Right now we are playing with confidence and as long as we take care of our matches and not worry about what the other players are doing we should get good results," McNamara said. "We have a tough six match stretch coming up beginning with this weekend which is very important. We need to take the confidence from last weekend into these matches and build upon it with the upcoming matches."
Saturday and Sunday's matches are each set for 2 p.m. at the Racquet Club. Admission to the Racquet Club is free. Pizza and drinks will also be available at each match. Live stats will be be available for the match on www.goblueraiders.com
