Blue Raiders finish fifth at GADO North Texas Classic
Narramore, Cochran lead way in first spring tournamentFebruary 18, 2008 · MT Media Relations
- Middle Tennessee moved up two spots with a 2-over 290 in the final round of the GADO North Texas Classic at the Flamingo Golf Club and claimed a top five finish out of the 14 teams in the opening event of the spring.
Chas Narramore and Rick Cochran led the Blue Raiders with top 20 finishes individually as Middle Tennessee turned in its third top five finish in five tournaments during the 2007-08 season. The Blue Raiders' 290 in Monday's final round was tied for the second lowest score of the day.
"We had a bit of a slow start Sunday and the second round (295) is what really got us but I'm proud of the way the guys battled and fought back today to give us a more favorable finish," Middle Tennessee first-round coach Whit Turnbow said. "It was pretty good for the first tournament of the spring but we know we can play much better and that's the encouraging thing."
Louisiana-Lafayette ran away from the field and won by 22 strokes over CSU-Northridge with a 18-under 848 for the three round event, hosted by North Texas.
Narramore rallied to play the final 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament at 2-under par after shooting a 75 in the opening round Sunday. His play in the second and third rounds enabled the junior to tie for 14th overall with a 1-over 217, which was 10 shots off the pace of medalist Kyle Nicolson from CSU-Northridge.
Cochran finished 16th after shooting par in the final round. Cochran was 2-over 218 for the tournament. His first-round 68 tied for the fourth best score in the tournament and his finish would have been much higher if not for a second-round 78.
Middle Tennessee was fourth as a team in par-3 scoring at 12-over and the Blue Raiders were fifth in par-4 scoring at 20-over. The Blue Raiders' 190 pars were the most of any of the 14 teams. Millard and Smith tied for second in the field with 41 pars each, followed by Narramore's 40.
