MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Junior Carl Morgan won the long jump, sophomores Brittany Cox and Sarah Nambawa both finished second in field events, and the women's distance medley relay won as well, leading Middle Tennessee's contingent Saturday at the Sun Belt Track and Field Championships at Murphy Center. After seven events the Blue Raider women are tied for third with 37 points and the men lead with 41 points through five events.
Carl Morgan and his brother, senior Carlos Morgan, both jumped 24-10 in the long jump, finishing first and second, respectively, in an event in which the Blue Raiders posted 22 points. Sophomore DeRay Sloss placed sixth with a mark of 23-4.75 and junior Lee Johnson was eighth with a mark of 23-0.
Nambawa and freshman Kortney Thurman both posted big personal-bests in the long jump, finishing second and third, respectively. Nambawa posted a mark of 19-7.5 and Thurman had a mark of 19-4.75.
In the shot put Cox was second with a mark of 46-4.75 and sophomore MeLyn Thompson placed fourth with a mark of 45-4.
In the distance medley relay, junior Ashley Comstock, senior Antranette Stringer, Gombert and Sangau set a Sun Belt Conference and Middle Tennessee record, winning the event in 12:07.87. The previous best at Middle Tennessee came in 1992 in 12:22.45.
In the men's 3000-meters, freshman Festus Chemaoi finished third in 8:31.04, while sophomore William Songock was fifth in 8:34.80 and sophomore Julius Kirui placed sixth in 8:41.61.
For the men, freshman Isaac Biwott, freshman Brandon Lucas, senior Chris Travis and freshman David Emery placed third in the DMR in 10:18.16 in the final event on Saturday.
In qualifying running events, sophomore Zamzam Sangau and senior Marjorie Gombert both advanced in the 800-meters with times of 2:17.52 and 2:19.13, respectively. Nambawa and junior TraMayne Gillyard both moved on in the 400-meters with marks of 55.87 and 56.09, while junior Tenesha Hill advanced in the 55-meters in 7.09. Gillyard also made the 200-meter finals with a prelim time of 24.85.
On the men's side junior Greg Franklin (6.36), freshman Chaz Ward (6.53), junior Samuel Adade (6.44), freshman Robert Ezell (6.50) and sophomore Phillip Tanner (6.55) all moved into the finals of the 55-meters.
In the 200, Adade (21.59), Franklin (21.60) and junior Pete Senatus (22.21) all moved on to Sunday's finals. Sloss (7.58), sophomore Freddie Rankin (7.79) and Senatus (7.95) all made it through to the finals of the 55-meter hurdles.
