Blue Raider Comeback Bid Falls Just Short
Split doubleheader with Lipscomb after 4-3 defeat
February 28, 2008 · David PowellMiddle Tennessee was coming off a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Bisons in the first game of the doubleheader earlier in the afternoon.
Caitlin McLure smacked an RBI single with two outs in the final inning to win the ballgame for the Blue Raiders.
Kellie Head (2-4) got the start on the mound for the Blue Raiders. The Freshman gave up three earned runs on five hits, while striking out two in 2.0 innings for the loss.
Lindsey Vander Lugt pitched the final 5.0 innings for MT. She gave up one earned run on three hits, while striking out four and walking one, in the relief appearance.
The Blue Raiders opened up the scoring in the 2nd inning when Martha Davis nailed a solo homerun that hit the parking lot well beyond the left field fence.
Davis was 1-for-1 with a homerun, RBI and three walks to lead the Blue Raider offense.
Lipscomb took the lead in the 3rd inning when Sara Simons smacked an RBI single to right field. The next batter, Abby Keese, hit homerun to right-center field as the Bisons took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the third inning.
Lipscomb made it 4-1 in the 6th inning with what would prove to be the game-winning run when Katie Brokmeyer hit an RBI double to left-center field.
Middle Tennessee had a chance to tie or win the game in the final inning. Brittney Banania singled to right-center field before Caitlin McLure beat out the throw to first base to put two runners on. Katie Mielke to load the bases before Ashley Cline's nailed a sacrifice fly to left field to cut the lead to 4-2.
With two outs, Davis and Whittney Padgett had back-to-back walks, driving in a run and cutting the lead to 4-3. With the bases loaded, Jessica Ives popped out to third base to end the game.
Middle Tennessee returns to action as they begin Sun Belt Conference play against the Troy Trojans in Troy, Ala. on Tuesday at 4 PM.
