MOBILE, Ala. - Middle Tennessee shot a 321 in the opening round of the USA Lady Jaguars Invitational, hosted by South Alabama, and is in 12th place out of the 18-team field entering Tuesday's final round.
The start was a disappointing one for Middle Tennessee but there was also positive news as senior Jamey Dillard is sharing the individual lead after shooting a 1-over 73 in the opening round. Dillard would have been in the clubhouse alone at the top of the leader board if not going bogey, bogey on 17 and 18. She was consistent in her first spring tournament, posting a 36 on the front and a 37 on the back.
"Jamey had a great round, especially in some tough, windy conditions," first-year coach Chris Adams said. "A score of 73 today is a good round and it could have been even better. She was good throughout."
After Dillard; however, the news was not so good for Middle Tennessee in its opening tournament of the spring. Senior Taryn Durham opened with an 80 after starting the day with a double bogey and is tied for 39th. Cecilia Orevik opened with an 82, followed by Leigh Wilkins (86) and Clara Leathers (87).
"I know the girls are disappointed because they know we are one of the best teams out here," Adams said. "We can make a move Tuesday. We just let the wind and conditions get to us and we didn't battle. There were some teams out there today that battled, but we didn't battle like we needed to. We will bounce back Tuesday."
East Tennessee leads the tournament after shooting 301 in the first round. It is a two-round event.
