Blue Raiders Cruise to 6-1 Win

MT handles UT-Martin on Saturday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team defeated UT-Martin 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Raiders began play by taking the doubles point. Junior Marlene Chemin and sophomore Stephanie Parkison teamed up to defeat Ernestine Koornhof and Elizma Schoonees 8-4.

The Skyhawks won the next match 8-6 as Sara Leavy and Belisa DeBrito won their match over seniors Claudia Szabo and Ann-Kristin Siljestrom. The Blue Raiders clinched the point to take a 1-0 lead in the match as freshman Shannon Hartmann and junior Pooja Kommireddi topped Martie Wahl and Mary Beth Gunn 8-4.

In singles action, the Skyhawks tied the match as Leavy defeated Parkison 6-1, 6-3 but the Blue Raiders rebounded as Chemin won her match 6-1, 6-4 over DeBrito.

In No. 3 singles Szabo performed well after losing her doubles match defeating Wahl 6-3, 6-1. Siljestrom won her match 6-4, 7-5 over Schoones to clinch the match for Middle Tennessee.

Kommireddi and Hartmann rounded out play for the Blue Raiders with two wins. Kommireddi defeated Gunn 6-3, 6-0 while Hartmann won her match 6-3, 6-0 over Koornhof.

The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Sunday, March 30 when they play host to Louisville at 2 p.m. Admission to the Racquet Club is free.
