Blue Raiders Fall 6-5

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee played a close game against No. 6 Vanderbilt but could not pull out the win late falling 6-5.

Middle Tennessee (12-12-1) notched nine hits in the game but could not capitalize on opportunities leaving 14 runners on base for the second consecutive night.

Freshman Tyler Burnett and junior Nathan Hines were the only two Blue Raiders to notch multiple hits in the game. Burnett ended the day 3 for 3 scoring two runs while Hines went 2 for 4 with one RBI.

On the mound, junior Brett Smalley took the loss falling to 1-1 on the season as he allowed one run on one hit in one inning of work. Smalley allowed Vanderbilt's (19-7) winning run, which was unearned, while on the mound.

Middle Tennessee used six pitchers in the game who allowed six runs on seven hits.

Hines gave Middle Tennessee a 1-0 lead with his double to centerfield which scored Barrett from first.

Vanderbilt's Parker Hanks tied the game in the top of the second with his solo home run down the right field line.

Junior Taylor Dennis drove in the second Middle Tennessee run with his single up the middle which scored freshman Bryce Brentz from second base. Middle Tennessee added two more runs on a fielder's choice followed by an error on the second baseman Alex Feinberg to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third, sophomore Chad Edwards allowed two runs to score on a wild pitch and a base on balls which cut the Blue Raider lead to one. The Commodores then tied the game at four on a single by Dominic de la Osa in the next inning.

The two teams traded runs again in the fourth inning to knot the score at 5. Then Vanderbilt took a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth as David Macias scored on a groundball after advancing to third on a throwing error by Dennis at second base.

Middle Tennessee will continue is homestand this weekend when it plays host to Louisiana-Lafayette in a three-game series. Friday, April 4 the Blue Raiders will face the Ragin' Cajuns at 6 p.m.
