MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Former Middle Tennessee All-American and world record holder Brian Oldfield still holds the American record and stands third all-time in the world in the shot put, according to this month's Track and News Field.

Oldfield's mark of 75-feet, 0-inches in 1975 ranks third all-time on the shot put list and stood for a dozen years before being broken twice in a two-year stretch. The mark is still the American record more than 30 years later.

Oldfield was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated on September 1, 1975, after his record-breaking performance and appeared in the magazine again in February of 2003 in a "Catching Up With ..." article. The entire 2003 article may be found at http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1028082/index.htm.

Oldfield was an All-American at Middle Tennessee in 1965 in the shot put and was a member of the 1972 Olympic Team in Munich, Germany.
