MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's athletic department inducted 10 student-athletes into the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society on Monday evening at the Rose and Emmett Kennon Hall of Fame, the fourth class of inductees for the honor society.
Seven of the 10 student-athletes were female, including two from volleyball and women's basketball, and one each from softball, soccer, and women's golf. The women honored were Brandi Brown (women's basketball), Nenita Burgess (soccer), Leslie Clark (volleyball), Martha Davis (softball), Ashley Mead (volleyball), Jackie Pickel (women's basketball) and Leigh Wilkins (women's golf).
Three baseball players represent all of the men's honorees - redshirt sophomore Dillon Heath and redshirt sophomore Justin Jones and junior Brett Smalley.
Chi Alpha Sigma is a non-profit organization established to recognize college students who earn a varsity letter in at least one sport while maintaining a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA throughout their junior and senior years. The goal of the organization is to recognize outstanding academic achievement by intercollegiate athletes.
Middle Tennessee has now inducted a total of 61 student-athletes into the society after just four years of eligibility. In 2005, the first year Blue Raider student-athletes could be inducted, a total of 26 were recognized. Middle Tennessee placed 10 student-athletes into the society in 2006, and 15 more in 2007.
