MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee head baseball coach Steve Peterson announced the signing of right-handed pitcher Coty Woods to a scholarship agreement on Monday, the first junior college signee for the Blue Raiders.

A Murfreesboro, Tenn., native, Woods has played at Walters State under head coach Ken Campbell for the past two years. As a freshman, Woods posted a record of 3-4 with seven saves in 23.2 innings of work. Woods had 23 strikeouts and allowed just five extra base hits with no home runs. He was named Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Hiwasee on April 28, 2007.

"He is a young man we followed at Riverdale High School who academically wasn't ready for Division I. We have followed him closely at Walters State. He has been pitching well and I feel it he will help us on the mound especially in the bullpen," head coach Steve Peterson said.

In 2008, Woods has a 7-1 record. Woods pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief against Dyersburg State on April 26 taking the win as he allowed just three hits while striking out five. "He has had a good career there and is just another Murfreesboro/Rutherford County ball player we have enticed to come to MTSU. I think he will be a good fit here and we need help in the bullpen," Peterson said.

Before attending Walters State, Woods played under head coach Buddy Powers at Riverdale High School.

As a senior at Riverdale, Woods had 95 strikeouts, 10 wins, five saves and a 1.20 ERA. At the plate, he batted .420 with six home runs. He was named All-District, All-Region and All-State in 2006. Woods was also awarded Warrior of the Year at Riverdale in 2006. As a junior in 2005, Woods was named All-District.

Middle Tennessee will play host to Troy on May 2 at 6 p.m. in the first game of its final home three-game conference series.
