TROY, Ala. - Outfielder Corrie Abel was named to the Sun Belt All-Conference second-team as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The Sophomore finished the regular season ranked sixth in the conference with a .377 batting average in 162 appearances at the plate. She will be honored with the rest of the selections at the pre-tournament banquet at 7 PM Tuesday.

"We are extremely proud of Corrie and her accomplishments. She has contributed tremendously to MT softball and the university as a whole both athletically and academically. I honestly think we could have had more athletes on the first and second All-Sun Belt teams. Their statistics certainly prove they belong with those that were awarded," said Head Coach Sue Nevar.

The Shorewood, Ill. native had a stellar second season for the Blue Raiders, highlighted by being named the Sun Belt Player of the Week on April 7 after leading the Blue Raiders to a series victory against conference-foe North Texas. She batted .364, including two game-winning hits, in three games against the Mean Green and led the team in homeruns (1), RBI (5), total bases (7) and slugging percentage (.636) in the series. The Joliet West HS product hit her first career grand-slam homerun in the 6th inning to win the first game of that weekend.

"This award in my eyes will springboard Corrie into a very much needed leadership role next season. She will be counted on heavily next year not only with her bat and passion for the game but also her leadership abilities," said Nevar.

On the season, Abel leads the team in batting average, runs scored (29), hits (61), total bases (82), slugging percentage (.506), least strikeouts (13), on-base percentage (.430), fielding percentage (1.000) and outfield assists (9).

The Blue Raiders begin their quest for the Sun Belt Conference crown as they face-off in the first round against the Florida International Golden Panthers at 12:30 PM Wednesday.

Said Nevar, "The fact that we placed just one athlete on the All-Conference teams gives us great incentive going into the Sun Belt Tournament and the 2009 softball season."
