Brentz receives third All-America honor

OMAHA, Neb. - Freshman Bryce Brentz has been named Third Team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association as announced on Sunday.

This is the fifth postseason honor for Brentz, who has also received two Freshman All-America honors.

Brentz played the final two-thirds of the season at the designated hitter position batting .329 with 18 home runs, 14 doubles, 68 RBI and 49 runs scored.

The Knoxville, Tenn., native is the first Blue Raider freshman to hit 18 home runs since Chris Whitehead did it in 1986.

Brentz also saw action on the mound as he went 1-0 in 28.2 innings of work with seven appearances. Brentz posted an ERA of 2.20 with batters hitting just .178 against him.

Brentz and South Alabama's Ryne Jernigan were the only Sun Belt players named to the third team.

There were three Sun Belt players named Second Team All-America by the committee as five total players in the conference received All-America honors.

The ABCA All-America Committee met in conjunction with the 2008 College World Series which began on Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
